The Salik Road Toll System in Dubai is an efficient way to manage traffic and fund road infrastructure improvements. Introduced by the RTA, Salik helps in reducing congestion by encouraging drivers to choose alternative routes. With toll gates located across the city, drivers are charged automatically as they pass through, making the process smooth and hassle-free.

The system promotes faster travel times, ensures better road maintenance, and contributes to a more organised traffic flow. However, it also brings Salik fines, which are imposed for violations like insufficient balance or driving without a registered Salik tag.

What is Salik?

Before diving into the fines, learn about this system and Salik tags here.

Salik, meaning ‘clear’ in Arabic, is Dubai's toll system designed to reduce traffic and encourage alternative routes. Toll gates are located around the city — when you pass through them, a fee is automatically deducted from your Salik account. This amount is eventually utilised for road maintenance and development.

Anyone driving in Dubai, whether in a local or foreign vehicle, needs a Salik tag — this applies to tourists as well. If you're a tourist or have an unregistered vehicle, you can still use the toll gates but must buy a tag within 10 days. After that, Salik fines will apply if you don't register.

What are the Different Types of Violations and Salik Fines?

There are 2 main types of Salik violations to remember —

Insufficient Funds

In case your Salik account does not have enough funds when you cross the toll gate, you are levied with a Salik fine of AED 50.

This is how it works —

  • You add money to your account in advance. When you drive through a toll gate, AED 4 is automatically deducted from your balance — it’s like a digital wallet for tolls.
  • If your account balance is low when you pass through, you’ll still get through but might face an AED 50 fine if you don’t recharge your account within 5 business days.
  • If you don’t add funds within those five business days, you will be charged an extra AED 50 for each day you use the toll gate with insufficient funds.

To avoid fines, make sure your Salik account always has enough money. If you accidentally use a toll gate with a low balance, just top up your account within 5 days to avoid any penalties.

Unregistered Plate

If you drive through a toll gate in Dubai without a Salik tag, you get a 10-day grace period to get and register your tag for your car. After these 10 days, you will face fines if you continue using the toll gates without a tag —

  • First Violation: AED 100 fine for using the toll gate after the grace period
  • Second Violation: AED 200 fine for the next trip through the toll gate without a tag
  • Subsequent Violations: AED 400 fine each time you use the toll gate without a tag

There’s a maximum of one Salik fine per day per vehicle, even if you pass through multiple times. To avoid fines, make sure to get and register your Salik tag within the grace period.
