Electronic toll systems are quite common around the world now. The same is the case with Dubai and Abu Dhabi, which have their electronic toll system popularly known as Salik and DARB toll gates, respectively. Moving through Dubai or Abu Dhabi will require you to pay the toll fee application when you pass through these toll gates. Currently, there are a total of 8 Salik toll gates installed in Dubai and 4 toll gates in Abu Dhabi.

How to Purchase a Salik Tag in Dubai?

The first step in the process is to purchase a Salik tag. You can purchase a Salik tag in Dubai via two channels – the Salik website and gas stations. Here are the steps for the same -  

 

Buy Salik Tag Via Salik Website 

• Open the official website of Salik Dubai and head to the Salik services section. 
• Find the ‘My Tag’ section here and click on it. 
• Scroll down and locate the ‘purchase tag’ button.
• Click on the button and start your tag purchasing process. 
• Fill out the required details – vehicle details, email address, phone number, and the delivery address for the tag.
• You will receive an OTP on your mobile number after you submit these details. 
• Verify the OTP and make payment for your Salik tag using available methods. 

 

Purchase Salik Tag From Gas Stations in UAE

 You can purchase your Salik tag from any of the following gas stations - 

• Emarat
• EPPCO
• ENOC
• ADNOC

Note: Individuals who own a vehicle registered outside the UAE can purchase a Salik tag through authorised sale agents only. The online method is not currently available for them.

How to Register and Activate a Salik Tag in Dubai?

Salik registration and activation in Dubai can be completed using several online platforms provided by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Dubai. You can use the official Salik website, , the RTA smart applications, RTA partners applications, customer happiness centres, and salik service counters.

It should be kept in mind that a Salik toll of AED 4 is chargeable for all vehicles that pass through the toll gates of Dubai. However, if you pass through Al Mamzar North or south within one hour, you will be charged only once.

The vehicles are required to buy a Salik tag and stick it on the windshield of their vehicle after activating and recharging it. The automated payment scanners deduct Salik from the tags directly.

Salik Tag Activation Online Via Official Salik Website

• Step1- Go to the official website of Salik and find the sign-in portal. 
• Step2- Sign in using your Salik credentials or RTA login credentials if already have an account.
  • If you are a new user, create a Salik account by clicking ‘create an online account’. 
• Step3- Move further and find the vehicles section after logging in successfully.
• Step4- Enter the Salik tag number, vehicle registration details, and the activation key in the designated spaces.
• Step5- Your vehicle will now be added to your Salik account. However, any additional changes can be made when required by logging into your Salik account. 

 

Salik Activation Via Mobile Applications

In addition to the website, you can also use mobile applications for your Salik registration online in Dubai. Listed below are the mobile applications that can be utilised for successful Salik registration in the UAE:

• Visit any one of the two customer happiness centres located in Deira and Umm Ramool. You can also pay a visit to one of the Salik service centres located near your residence. 
• Carry all the required documents for Salik registration Dubai with you. 
• Find the designated desk for Salik registration in the happiness centres. 
• Submit your documents and wait for the activation.
• Once your paperwork is reviewed, your Salik tag will be activated. 

 

Salik tag Activation Via Salik Customer Support Cell

• Dial 80072545 and connect with a Salik customer support agent.
• Inform the customer support executive about your requirements related to Salik registration.
• The executive will guide you through the Salik tag activation process.
• Provide the executive with details such as your Salik tag number and vehicle registration number when prompted. 
• Once all the information is verified, your Salik registration Dubai will be complete and the tag will be activated.  

Note: As per the RTA, the registration and activation merely takes 10 mins via the customer happiness centre and Salik service counters. However, you can instantly register and activate the Salik tag in Dubai instantly via the website and smart applications. 

Things to Remember While Applying for Registration and Activation of Salik Tag in Dubai

• The customer needs to finish all the necessary actions until they get a message confirming the transaction is done successfully. 
• If the customer possesses more than one Salik tag, they would need to use any one of these to finish signing up and set up a new account. Afterwards, they can add the remaining tags to the account for activation.
•  Once the customer receives their account information and the PIN via a text message, they can set up a digital Salik account. This online account allows them to view their account details electronically and utilise it for any future Salik services.

How to Add a New Vehicle to Your Salik Account in Dubai?

If you have just bought a new vehicle and registered it under your name, you can avail of the facility of adding it to your existing Salik account. However, keep in mind that if the vehicle has been registered under one of your family members’ names, a new Salik registration Dubai will have to be filled for your new vehicle. 

If the registered owner of the vehicle from your family already has a Salik account, they can add the vehicle to it. It should be noted that a Salik account is different from a Salik tag and that you will need to get a new Salik tag for every new vehicle added to your account. Older Salik tags cannot be used here.

Salik Registration in Abu Dhabi

In 2018, Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport set up a Toll Gate system similar to Dubai's Salik system. This system automatically deducts toll fees when vehicles cross through the gates. The system is often referred to as the Darb toll gate system.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) along with the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) have activated Darb tolls on four major bridges in Abu Dhabi:

• Al Maqtaa Bridge
• Mussafah Bridge
• Sheikh Zayed Bridge
• Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bridge

It's mandatory for all drivers in Abu Dhabi to register with the Darb toll gate system.

How to Register for a Salik Tag in Abu Dhabi?

You can register for a Salik tag in Abu Dhabi via the DARB official website and mobile application.

Mentioned below are the steps involved - 

• Step1- Open the DARB official website or mobile application and head to the account login portal.
• Step2- Choose ‘individual’ to create your account. 
• Step3- Enter your official or personal email address in the designated space. 
• Step4- You will receive an OTP on this email ID. Enter the OTP when prompted by the website/app. 
• Step5- Once the password is verified, select the emirate where you have registered your vehicle. 
• Step6- Provider your traffic code and the registered phone number.
• Step7- Enter the OTP sent to your registered phone number when prompted. 
• Step8- Choose your password and complete the Salik registration process. 

How to Activate a Salik Tag in Abu Dhabi?

To pay Salik automatically using your vehicle license plate, you must activate your Salik account first. Follow the given steps for the activation process:

• Step1- Log into your DARB account using your Emirates ID, registered email, or traffic code. 
• Step2- Find the register vehicle section and open it.
• Step3- Enter the details of the vehicle you wish to add.
• Step4- Choose a payment method to add money to your Salik wallet.
• Step5- Add money to the wallet and click & pay to complete the transaction.
• Step6- Your Salik account will be activated once the transaction is completed.

You can follow the same steps every time you want to add a new wallet for a new vehicle to your Salik account.It should be noted that a new wallet can be created for each vehicle you add.

Key Facts About Salik Registration in Abu Dhabi

• Toll in Abu Dhabi is applicable only during rush hours – 7 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 7 pm, from Saturday to Thursday.
• No Salik will be applicable on official holidays and off-peak hours. 
• Vehicles registered with DARB will be identified via their license plate itself. 
• Senior Emiratis, retired Emiratis, people of determination, and Emiratis with limited income are exempt from paying Salik in Abu Dhabi. 
• Each vehicle owner in Abu Dhabi is required to register with DARB. Salik registration in Abu Dhabi shall be done by people eligible for exemption as well. 
• The toll gates will exempt the eligible people from Salik reduction automatically. However, this applies only to vehicles registered in Abu Dhabi. 
• You will have to claim Salik exemption on DARB if your vehicle is registered in any other emirate. 
• Each individual can only have one DARB and Salik registration account. All vehicles registered under your name can be added to this account. Any new vehicles that you purchase will be registered automatically in your DARB account. 
• Not paying your Salik on time can attract fines of up to AED 10,000 as per the graveness of the violation and the length of the payment delay.

Activating Automatic Payments for Salik Wallets

Each vehicle that you have added to your Salik account in Abu Dhabi will have a separate wallet, with the Salik for each vehicle being deducted from their individual wallets. You can have as many wallets as you like as long as the number does not exceed the total number of vehicles added to your account. 

Everyone must switch on automatic payments from the vehicle page to pay Salik whenever they pass through a toll gate. The automatic payment feature can be activated for each registered vehicle in your Salik account individually, although you can deactivate these features as well. The automatic payment feature is only available for vehicles registered in Abu Dhabi. Salik will be deducted automatically for all other vehicles.

Follow the steps given below to add wallets and activate automatic payments:

• Log into DARB using your credentials and find the ‘add wallet’ button. You will find it on the dashboard. 
• Click on the button to add a new wallet. 
• You can also add a new wallet by clicking on your username on the dashboard and finding the relevant option there. 
• Link your vehicles to one wallet each. 
• To activate auto payments on a wallet in your account, visit the vehicle page of the vehicle under consideration. 
• Find the automatic payment activation option and switch it on. 
• You can deactivate the feature from here itself. 
• You can also change the wallet assigned to a particular vehicle by clicking on the ‘Change Portfolio’ button on the vehicle page.
