What is Salik Tag? How to Activate it?

Salik Tag is a chip-embedded label that you can stick on your windscreen. It has greatly paved the way for collecting toll fees automatically, with the tag working efficiently in any weather and at a wide range of vehicle speeds. Once your vehicle passes through a Salik toll gate, the scanners spontaneously detect the embedded chip in the tag and deduct the toll charge from your Salik account.

To seamlessly move within the UAE, you will be required to activate the Salik Tag. The following steps will guide you on how to buy a tag and how is it activated:

Buying a Salik Tag

  • You have to purchase a Salik tag before opening a Salik account. Simply visit the website and click on the tab “Purchase Salik Tag” under the Salik Services category.
  • After this, fill out the vehicle registration and customer information in the form.
  • You will receive a One-Time-Password. Fill it in and verify the OTP to continue.
  • Provide the correct delivery information and cross-check the address before making the payment. Once you are done confirming the process, the tag will reach you in the next 5 working days. However, delays may occasionally occur due to unavoidable circumstances.
  • The tag can also be bought from the affiliated gas stations like Emarat, ADNOC, ENOC/ EPPCO, and banks like Emirates NBD and Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB).
  • You will get a confirmation message for the transaction once you purchase the tag. This will also enable the tag.
  • Apply the tag on the car’s windshield when you receive it.

How to Activate a Salik Tag Online?

Follow the steps mentioned below to activate the Salik Tag online:

  • Once your Salik tag is shipped, you will need to locate the number and key at the back of the tag.
  • The printed T. C. number is to be used for all Salik communications. The T.C. number can be found on the vehicle registration card you possess.
  • Under the ‘Salik Service’ category on the website, select the ‘Active a Tag’ tab.
  • Fill in the requested information like vehicle registration and profile information. Once done, cross-check the information and upload the necessary documents.
  • In case you face any issues during the process, contact the customer centre or call centre to resolve the issue and activate the tag.

How to Deactivate Salik Tag?

If you are leaving the UAE, it is necessary to deactivate the Salik tag. However, it is also mandatory to deactivate the Salik tag in case of theft or sale of the vehicle as you would still be responsible for the toll. To deactivate the tag online, you can visit:

  1.     Salik.gov.ae
  2.     Smart Salik Application or
  3.     Call Customer service

Another option available is to visit the customer happiness centres in Dubai. Similarly, if you have sold off your car, inform the same to Salik Customer Service so they can update your account.

What is a Salik Account? Can you Deactivate a Salik Account?

A Salik account is essentially a prepaid account connected to your Salik tag. It contains the balance from which the toll is subtracted when you pass through a Salik toll gate. As having enough funds in this account is necessary, you can use either of the following options to recharge the account:

  • Recharge Card
  • Call 800-Salik (72545), the helpline number
  • Via SMS
  • Cash recharge with Kiosk machines

One of the most commonly asked questions is whether you can deactivate a Salik Account. It should be noted that it is not possible to deactivate the account as you need it to move around in the country. However, if you are leaving the country, you can cancel your Salik account. Your account will be paused for three years if you deactivate a tag. So if you are permanently leaving the country, you can connect with Salik Customer Service and request the cancellation of your account.

Key Takeaway

Affixing a Salik Tag on your vehicle is mandatory in the UAE. This tag is configured to a prepaid account called Salik Account. Every time you drive past the Salik toll gate, the toll charge will be automatically deducted from your Salik Account. You can purchase the tag online, from an authorised fuel station, or from an associated UAE bank. Once you receive the tag, you can stick it to the car’s windshield and activate it either via SMS or online.

In case you have sold your car or are a victim of car theft, immediately deactivate the tag to stop being charged whenever the vehicle passes a Salik toll. It is important to note that you cannot deactivate a Salik Account. Consequently, if you are leaving the country, you will need to cancel the account permanently.
