If you are someone who just loves adventure and new experiences, hitting the open road and embarking on a road trip is certainly a thrilling way to explore the beauty of our planet. The desire to discover quirky roadside attractions and breathtaking natural wonders is truly irresistible.
Road trips offer a one-of-a-kind opportunity to immerse yourself in the world and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. However, it's essential to obtain an international driving licence if you wish to go on road trips across the world.
An international driving licence is a crucial document that you must carry when planning road trips across the globe. The International Driving License (IDL) holds the status of a United Nations convention and stands among the scores of nations that recognize its validity. As a result, travellers arriving in the UAE with a valid IDL may lawfully operate a vehicle within its borders.
As per the UAE Automobile and Touring Club website, those who wish to drive in the Emirates must have an international driving licence, which has been mandatorily issued outside the country. Upon arriving in the UAE, visit visa holders cannot apply for an international driving licence. They must get one from their home country.
As per a notification released on the RTA website, if you have a valid international driving licence, you can “drive a car registered to your name or one of your first-degree relatives” or rent a car as well. Such licence holders can either drive motorcycles or any light vehicle. On the other hand, transit visa holders can drive a vehicle only if they possess a valid driving licence and have approval from an insurance company.
According to a statement by the RTA, individuals can use their international driving licence in more than one country. Having an international driving licence, thus, is a valuable asset for anyone planning to travel and drive in foreign countries.
Keep in mind that the documentation requirements and application processes, however, may vary depending on the issuing country. In addition, note that an international driving licence is not a replacement for a valid driving licence from your home country but rather an add-on that allows for easier recognition of one’s driving qualifications abroad.
To be on the safe side, before embarking on any international trip involving driving, gather accurate details on the driving licence requirements and regulations of the countries you will be visiting.
