What is Cancer?

Do You Know?

  • Approximately 1 in 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime
  • As of 2022, about 53.5 million people were alive within 5 years following a cancer diagnosis
  • The most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide include lung cancer (2.5 million cases), breast cancer (2.3 million cases) and colorectal cancer (1.9 million cases)

Cancer is a disease where some cells of the body grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body.

Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die — new ones take their place. Sometimes, however, this orderly process breaks down and abnormal or damaged cells grow and multiply when they shouldn't. These cells may form tumours, which can be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign).

Cancerous tumours can invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body.

Some of the major types of cancer are —

  1. Breast Cancer: The most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the UAE
  2. Colorectal Cancer: Affects both men and women, with a notable incidence rate in the UAE population
  3. Thyroid Cancer: Particularly common among women
  4. Leukemia: A type of blood cancer prevalent in both adults and children
  5. Prostate Cancer: Among the top cancers affecting men in the UAE, with a significant number of cases reported annually
  6. Lung Cancer: A leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men, often associated with smoking

What are the Causes of Cancer?

The development of cancer has been generally associated with a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Here are some key contributors —

  1. Smoking is the leading cause of cancer, responsible for approximately 15% of cases
  2. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of several cancers, including those of the bowel, kidney, and womb
  3. Alcohol intake is linked to an increased risk of various cancers such as breast and liver cancer
  4. Lack of regular exercise can contribute to weight gain and increase cancer risk
  5. Certain infections, like human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B or C, can lead to cancer development
  6. Both ionising (like X-rays) and non-ionising (such as ultraviolet light) radiation can damage DNA and lead to cancer
  7. Exposure to substances like asbestos, benzene, and air pollution can increase cancer risk
  8. Inherited genetic mutations can predispose individuals to certain types of cancer

Cancer and Health Insurance in the UAE

The coverage for cancer in health insurance varies across the Emirates, with specific programs and policies in place to support patients.

Dubai: Comprehensive Coverage through the BASMAH Initiative

In Dubai, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) launched the BASMAH initiative to enhance cancer care. This program confirms that all medical insurance policies cover screening and treatment for breast, colorectal, and cervical cancers. Residents with mandatory health insurance are automatically eligible for these services, regardless of their plan's annual coverage limit.

Abu Dhabi and Northern Emirates: Coverage Limitations

In Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates, health insurance coverage for cancer treatment is generally subject to the annual policy cap. Basic plans might cover up to AED 250,000 annually — once this limit is reached, patients are responsible for additional costs. Unlike Dubai, there are no specific initiatives like BASMAH in these regions.

Key Considerations for Health Insurance Coverage

When evaluating health plans in the UAE, consider the following —

  1. Coverage Limits: Some plans have a limit of AED 150,000 for chronic conditions, including cancer, which may not be sufficient. Look for plans without such limits for comprehensive coverage.
  2. Co-Payments: For inpatient treatments, co-pays on essential plans are usually capped at AED 500 per visit or AED 1,000 per year. Many full-coverage plans don’t require co-pays for inpatient care. Outpatient care co-pays can range from 10–20% of the bill.
  3. Pre-Existing Conditions: Disclose any pre-existing health conditions to the insurance company — non-disclosure can affect coverage eligibility.
  4. Family History: A family history of cancer usually doesn’t increase premiums. However, insurers might charge extra if there are other health issues.

When to Buy Health Insurance with Cancer Coverage in the UAE?

Obtaining health insurance with cancer coverage is a proactive measure to safeguard against the costs associated with cancer treatment.

In the UAE, it's advisable to secure such coverage before any diagnosis or onset of symptoms. Buying a health policy while in good health provides comprehensive coverage without the complications that pre-existing conditions can introduce.

Considerations for Pre-Existing Conditions

If you've already been diagnosed with cancer or are exhibiting symptoms, obtaining health insurance becomes more complex —

  1. Disclosure Requirements: It's imperative to fully disclose any pre-existing conditions when applying for medical insurance. Non-disclosure can lead to claim denials or policy cancellations.
  2. Waiting Periods: Many insurers enforce a waiting period, usually ranging up to 6 months, during which coverage for pre-existing conditions is restricted. During this time, treatments related to existing conditions may not be covered.
  3. Premium Adjustments: Insurers may increase premiums to offset the higher risk associated with pre-existing conditions. This adjustment reflects the anticipated costs of managing existing health issues.

Recommendations

  1. Early Enrollment: To get comprehensive coverage, it's best to enroll in a health insurance plan with cancer coverage before any diagnosis. This approach avoids the limitations and higher costs associated with pre-existing conditions.
  2. Policy Review: Carefully examine policy terms, focusing on coverage limits, waiting periods, and exclusions related to cancer treatment.
  3. Consultation: Seek advice from insurance experts like Policybazaar.ae who can provide personalised guidance to help you choose the most suitable coverage.
