What is a Medical Fitness Test?

Medical fitness test or screening is a mandatory test for all expats residents of the UAE when they apply for a visa renewal. Resident or work visas are renewed as per the results of this medical screening. This medical fitness test is also required when applying for a new visa as well. 

The medical fitness test is generally performed to detect communicable diseases like tuberculosis and HIV. Some applicants are also required to get tested for Hepatitis B and Syphilis. This is applicable to only a few categories which are as follows –  

  • Domestic workers such as housemaids. A negative pregnancy test result is also required for female domestic workers
  • Food and beverage industry workers, especially the ones coming in direct contact with food like servers, for instance
  • Beauty centre and salon professionals 
  • Workers in nurseries
  • Health club workers

When Do I Need a Medical Fitness Test?

As explained before, medical screening is required at the time of visa renewal or when applying for a new visa. All foreign residents of the UAE over the age of 18 years are required to take the medical fitness test or the medical screening. The medical screening in Abu Dhabi is done for individuals applying for an Abu Dhabi resident or work visa. 

Generally, the medical screening in Abu Dhabi is done after you have successfully submitted the visa application. The visa application fee receipt can be used to book the medical screening in Abu Dhabi. 

The latest Cabinet Resolution passed in 2016 dictates new guidelines for TB screening in visa renewal medical screening in Abu Dhabi. TB screening is mandatory for all expats applying for a visa renewal, whether in Abu Dhabi or other emirates. 

The concerned medical centres issue a conditional fitness certificate if the applicant is diagnosed with active TB, drug-resistant TB, or scarred tissue. A one-year temporary visa is issued based on the conditional fitness certificate. The concerned applicant then goes through treatment for TB in the emirates. 

How to Book a Medical Fitness Test in Abu Dhabi?

Medical screening in Abu Dhabi can be done at one of the Disease Prevention and Screening Centres approved and regulated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, i.e., SEHA. Visa applicants can get an appointment for their SEHA medical screening using the SEHA mobile application.

STEP 1 – Get the Appointment 

The first step here is to get the appointment sorted. Given below are the steps to book an appointment for SEHA medical screening for visa in Abu Dhabi – 

  • Using the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, download the SEHA Visa Screening application 
  • Use your personal phone number, email ID, and Emirates ID to register and sign into the application. Choose a suitable username and password for your account. 
  • Use the OTP and verify the email address and phone number 
  • Scan your current visa or entry permit and the passport to upload for the next step to finalise account set-up 
  • Use your username and password to sign into the application now 
  • Find the “request appointment” button to book one as per spot availability in medical screening centres present near your area of residence in Abu Dhabi 
  • Enter your Unique Identification (UID) number next 
  • Confirm your appointment once you have verified all the details entered – you will receive a text message on your registered phone number for the same

STEP 2 – Green Pass on Al Hosn App 

Once you have booked the appointment, you should start working towards getting a Green Pass on the Al Hosn application. You can get the Green Pass if your RT-PCR test shows negative results. Fully vaccinated people can take the test a maximum of 15 days before their appointment date. Partially or unvaccinated people, on the other hand, can take the test a maximum of 2 days before their medical screening in Abu Dhabi appointment date.  

STEP 3 – Get Tested and Receive the Results 

Once your status on the Al Hosn app is green, visit the medical centre where your appointment is fixed. Fill out the application for the medical fitness test, attach the documents, and pay the due fee. The test fee differs for standard, express, and premium tests. 

Get tested after submitting the fee. The test results will be available in a few hours as per the type of test you signed up for. The results of the standard test are generally available within 24-48 hours of getting the test done.
