Blazing Sun, Pounding Heads: The Fiery Duo of Heatwaves and Migraines

On a scorching Sunday, July 9, the United Arab Emirates experienced a sweltering heatwave, with temperatures inching close to the 50-degree mark. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) reported a staggering 49.4°C in Hamim, located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi. This marked the highest temperature recorded in the country so far this year, sending waves of heat across the nation.

The Surge in Headaches and Migraines, UAE Doctors Reveal

As the mercury rises, UAE doctors have noticed a disturbing correlation: an increase in headaches and migraines during the scorching summer season. The volume of patients seeking inpatient care for these ailments has surged by 10-20 percent. Dehydration, abrupt temperature changes, dietary triggers, and disrupted routines have all been identified as contributors to these painful conditions.

Dr. Najo Jomaa, a Specialist Neurologist at Burjeel Farha Hospital in Al Ain, explained, "Headaches are more common in the summer due to the heat, which can trigger both general headaches and migraines in susceptible individuals. Dehydration, a common occurrence in the summer, can significantly amplify the intensity of migraines."

Women at Higher Risk: The Weather Factor

Statistically, women are 3 times more prone to migraines compared to men. Dr. Srinivasa Rao Polumuru, a Consultant in Internal Medicine at NMC Specialty Hospital in Al Nahda, Dubai, highlighted the role of weather in these conditions. He explained that headaches are more prevalent during the summer due to notable changes in barometric pressure.

Barometric pressure refers to the measurement of air pressure in the atmosphere, which fluctuates based on temperature, altitude, and moisture. Dr. Polumuru stated, "The exact mechanisms linking sunlight exposure to headaches are not fully understood. However, it is hypothesized that changes in sinus fluid pressure and distribution may trigger these events. Heat exhaustion, excessive humidity, and dehydration are common culprits. As a result, we have witnessed a surge of 10-20 percent in patients seeking inpatient treatments during these months."

Taking Control: Tips to Beat the Heat Headaches

Recognising the importance of early intervention, doctors stress the need to address headaches before they escalate into severe conditions. Dr. Ravi Shanker Lohano, a Specialist Neurologist at Saudi German Hospital Ajman, provided valuable dos and don'ts to avoid headaches.

The list includes staying hydrated throughout the day, limiting sun exposure, taking regular breaks in shaded areas, wearing polarised sunglasses, using fragrance-free sunscreen, maintaining a normal meal schedule, adhering to medication prescriptions, and storing medications at room temperature.

By following these guidelines, individuals can greatly mitigate the impact of scorching temperatures and alleviate the discomfort caused by headaches, potentially saving themselves from the need for expensive medical care.
